In this five-week course, we explore the heart of hatha yoga, to heal and thrive on all levels – and GET THINGS MOVING: In addition to physical strength and flexibility, the deeper aspects of yoga help us guide prana, the vital life force that animates all levels of being. Prana enables the body to move and the mind to think; our practice helps this unfurl and grow optimally. Prana is the inner intelligence that coordinates our senses, and also leads us to the perceptible manifestation of our most expansive selves.

Yoga tradition provides 5 specific movements and functions of prana; these are called “vayus” or “winds.” Awareness of these winds helps us better navigate our lives AND build lasting resilience, while also inviting more JOY!
These are the 5 gateways you’ll open in these 5 weeks of practice.

Each Vayu is a gateway into a specific movement of vitality, and each governs different areas of the body, physiological functions, and subtle energies. As we allow these directions to flow harmoniously, it assures our health and well-being of body and mind, while also enlivening our unique talents and we move with more meaning and purpose.

🌬 Week 1, Gateway 1: Vitality (Prana Vayu)
The Power to Awaken & Receive
We begin with the inward-moving wind of inspiration, to foster strength as well as increase motivation. Practices focus on the upper body, including heart-opening, chest-led movement, and breath awareness to reconnect you with your life-force and contentment. You begin to see the world in all its brightness. You’ll explore forward motions, and increasing lung capacity and momentum.

🌿 Week 2, Gateway 2: Grounding (Apana Vayu)
The Power to Release & Root
This stabilizing direction clears stagnation and opens space for resilience. We emphasize grounding through the lower body, vigorous breath methods, and movement that helps you release what no longer serves you. You’ll root into your center while also softening the periphery, so you expand your capacity to stay present and unflappable. This increases strength, purpose, and confidence.

🔥Week 3, Gateway 3: Balance (Samana Vayu)
The Power to Metabolize & Integrate
At the navel center, opposites are metabolized and insight is born. This week brings practices that strengthen the core, refine focus, and cultivate your capacity to hold complexity with clarity. We’ll also play with Bandhas, or “locks” in the body’s musculature and energy channels, to bring mindful and supple control and amplify mobility. You’ll also experience many balance practices to invite and accelerate inner transformation.

🕊 Week 4, Gateway 4: Ascent (Udana Vayu)
The Power to Rise & Express
Here we channel upward flow into voice, vision, and vitality. You’ll experience multiple vinyasas (yoga “flows” or “precise placement,” moving from posture to posture). Then the breath, neck stretches and strengtheners, and movement for the throat and head encourage upliftment, self-expression, and spacious awareness. You’ll also explore classic techniques to clear, balance, and activate the main energy channels in the body, as well as energy points within the head. This direction stimulates the thyroid and parathyroid glands towards balance, and also facilitates enthusiasm, alertness, and articulate expression.

💫 Week 5, Gateway 5: Wholeness (Vyana Vayu)
The Power to Circulate & Shine
Our final gateway reveals the radiance that comes from within. We explore expansive movement, meditative breath, and integration practices that harmonize all the vayus—bringing coherence, calm, and luminous wholeness. This session includes lots of standing postures where you expand your energy throughout the limbs while connecting with a deeper awareness of the axial core energy. This propels the mind inward, empowering the mind to become more expansive in its reach. You’ll learn how to distribute healing energies throughout the mind and body, lessen the grip and surrender old habits, and offer comfort to yourself and others.

In addition to the five vayu sequences and instruction in the energetics of yoga, each week you will also receive 4 additional layers of gathering, centering, and increasing your energy:
BEFORE CLASS:
1. An individual energy attunement with your teacher, Virginia;
2. Sanskrit mantra practice to call your energies home and refine your attention and intention; and
TO CONCLUDE & ENRICH PRACTICE:
3. A guided systematic relaxation that cleanses, activates, and directs your innate healing powers of prana.
4. A grounding, elevating, and integrating meditation to synthesize all you’ve learned and practiced, so you return to your day ready and radiant.

BEFORE CLASS – GATING CERMONY & MANTRA CIRCLE
Doors open an HOUR early so each of you receive personalized attention for a “Gating Ceremony,” a essential practice for tunings into the winds of energy, AND making your practice time more powerful.
You receive 3 to 5 minutes for a few moments of one-on-one with your teacher Virginia, to get centered, connect, and breathe. This rich moment allows you to contemplate what you are ready to leave behind because it is complete or drains your energy, and what you desire to cultivate.
You’ll release mental & energetic burdens, and become more focused & better resourced, to foster your best self. This energetic attunement alone is worth the price of admission, as it quickens the process of harnessing and refining your energy.

Then, we come together as a group and shift our focus inward, increasing our capacity to let go of what drains us, and place our most crucial resource – our attention – on what matters. Virginia guides an ancient mantra of togetherness, following by a visualization to open our sacred circle.

TO CONCLUDE & ENRICH YOUR PRACTICE – SYSTEMATIC RELAXATION & BRIEF PRANA MEDITATION

After the weekly sequence that focuses on the vayus (see above), guided systematic relaxation helps you experience firsthand what happens, rearranges, and expands on a subtle, pranic level.
Relaxation is where the truest yoga begins. Not only does this process contribute to resilience – because it teaches the body to recover systematically – but it also allows the body to rest and the mind to focus and quiet, so the vast powers behind the noise begin to surface. It is an exercis in trust and growth: The thinking mind surrenders to the buddhi, the awakened mind, as it taps into infinite energy reserves and profound joy that are your birthright. This is the beauty and wisdom of life.
Finally, we sit a few moments together to bask in all our time together, and honor your dedication to your well-being, and all that has been cultivated, so it continues. This simple meditative moment yields lasting results.

These five weeks are a gift to your deepest and most expansive well-being: When we focus on the vayus in yoga practice, we pay attention that that which animates our vitality. Rather than simply move the body in this way or that, or repeat a certain sequence, we start sensing the foundational powers of prana:
